How Often Should You Have Your Carpets Professionally Cleaned?

The right frequency depends on pets, kids, allergies, and foot traffic. Here's a simple schedule for every household type.

The Industry Standard: Every 12–18 Months

The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) and most major manufacturers recommend professional hot-water extraction cleaning every 12–18 months for average households. Some warranties actually require it — skipping professional cleaning can void your carpet warranty.

More Frequent Cleaning: When You Need It Every 6–12 Months

  • Pets: Dogs and cats track in outdoor allergens, shed dander, and have accidents. Pet households should clean every 6–12 months at minimum.
  • Young children: Spills, food crumbs, and general mess accelerate soil buildup. Annual minimum; semi-annual if kids are toddler age.
  • Allergy sufferers: Carpets trap dust mites, pollen, and pet dander. More frequent cleaning reduces allergen load significantly.
  • High-traffic areas: Hallways, stairs, and living rooms see 3–5× more foot traffic than bedrooms. These areas can be spot-cleaned or cleaned separately more often.

The Vacuum-First Rule

Before every professional cleaning, vacuum thoroughly — ideally the day before. A good pre-vacuum removes loose surface debris so the cleaning machine focuses on embedded soil, not surface dust. This makes professional cleaning 20–30% more effective.

Signs You Need Cleaning Now (Not Later)

  • Visible soil lines along traffic paths that vacuuming doesn't remove
  • Persistent odors that don't clear after airing out the room
  • Allergy symptoms that improve when you leave the house
  • Carpet that looks gray or dull compared to under furniture
  • A visible stain that set more than 24 hours ago (these rarely come out with DIY spot treatment)

Maintenance Between Cleanings

Vacuum high-traffic areas 2–3× per week and the rest of the carpet weekly. Use walk-off mats at every exterior door — they remove up to 85% of incoming soil before it reaches your carpet. Address spills immediately: blot (never rub), work from outside in, and use clean water first before any cleaner.
